Refer a Child
Each wish is as unique as the child who makes it. And, Make-A-Wish® Canada ensures that each wish-granting situation is a one-of-a-kind experience for the child and their family. However, there is a standard process by which a child is referred, qualified and granted a wish.

Referring a wish

Make-A-Wish® does not solicit wishes. All children who receive their wishes are referred to us by family, friends, medical personnel or social workers. Sometimes, the child may even refer themselves for a wish.

We always make sure the family is aware of the referral before taking the wish to the next step.

If you have any questions about referring a child for a wish, please contact either your local Chapter, the Canada Office at wishreferrals@makeawish.ca or call 1-888-822-9474.

Eligibility

To be eligible to receive a wish from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a child must meet the following criteria:
  • the child has a life-threatening medical condition which will threaten their existence prior to their 18th year.
  • the child is between the ages of 3 and 17 years of age.
  • the child has the cognitive ability of a 3 year old and can communicate and comprehend their wish.
  • the child cannot have received a prior wish from any wish-granting organization
The child's treating physician and our Medical Advisor make the final determination as to whether the child is medically eligible and able to participate in the wish.

Privacy Policy

Make-A-Wish® Canada respects the privacy of our wish children and their families. All medical and personal information is kept confidential and is not communicated with outside parties unless consent is provided by the child’s parents or guardians and is required for the child's wish.
